singer with rock band the Tubes
“Probably the first album that I ever bought was ‘West Side Story’, the original cast album. When I was a kid in elementary school, I was really into plays, and all I wanted to do was plays. So I bought all of those original cast albums like ‘The Music Man’ and ‘The Most Happy Fella’ and ‘Red Head’ with Gwen Vernon -- some of the most obscure, wacky, Broadway cast albums. ‘West Side Story’ was definitely one of my first ones.
“I used to buy singles before that, back when I was a little kid. So the first record that I ever bought wasn’t an album, but rather a single, one of those seven-inch slabs of vinyl with a big hole in the middle. It was ‘Blueberry Hill’ by Fats Domino. I was crazy for that R&B sound -- Fats Domino, James Brown, Chubby Checker. And you know, I still have all those old 45s, too.”
