“The first records I listened to were my mother’s on a wind-up victrola. Actually, I think we called it a talking machine, and you were supposed to change the needle every time you played a record. My grandmother stuffed an old bird’s nest down the end of the -- well, you can’t call it a speaker, I guess you’d call it the metal horn.
“I grew up listening to Glenn Miller and the Andrews Sisters, but the first bit of rock and roll that I ever played on the 78 RPM machine blew the bird’s nest right out. There were twigs all over the floor.
“The first record that I ever bought was a single -- ‘Purple People Eater’ by Sheb Wooley, who was also one of the actors in ‘Rawhide,’ I believe.”
