“The first record album that I ever bought? That’s a hard one. I remember the first one that I heard that really made an impact on me, but I didn’t buy it because I was only 12 years old. I was too young to go out and buy records because I didn’t have any money. It was ‘Highway 61 Revisited’ in 1965.
“I started buying records, I guess, when I was about 14 probably. I don’t know. It might have been a Monkees album. Who knows? The Monkees, the Lovin’ Spoonful, the Byrds... I don’t know. I was listening to everything. My brother was buying records, and my dad was bringing home records, too, like the Fugs and jazz and Hank Williams and all. But I don’t remember the first album I ever bought.
“Wait. I’ll bet it was the Beatles for me. I bet that’s what it was, actually. I bet it was a Beatles album. Maybe ‘Meet the Beatles.’ Maybe I had an allowance or something and went and got it. ‘Cause I remember hearing the Beatles on the radio in ‘64 when I was in fourth or fifth grade.”
