ED SANDERS
singer with folk-rock band the Fugs
“I went to a concert at the Kansas City Municipal Auditorium with Bill Haley, Chuck Berry and -- who the hell else? -- oh, yeah, Bo Diddley. It was a gigantic thing, but there were a lot of knife fights though, and it was hard to watch Bill Haley when there were all these knife fights going on in the aisles.
“After that show, I went out and bought Bill Haley’s single, ‘13 Women’ with ‘Keep That Candle Burning Bright, Mother’ on the other side, probably around 1955.
“After that, I was trying to get all the interesting things, like the Cleftones, who were a bunch of kids from Queens who made some nice songs. And, of course, all the early Elvis stuff.”
