“Well, as a child growing up, we weren’t allowed to buy records. Only our mother could buy records, and she would only buy gospel records.
“Finally, though, we convinced her to buy Elvis Presley. It was ‘Crying in the Chapel,’ and because the word ‘chapel’ was in the title, I guess she figured that it was close enough to gospel music.
“As far as the first album I ever bought, I think it was probably a Marvin Gaye album. It might have been ‘What's Goin’ On?,’ but I really can’t remember exactly which one it was.”
