SPENCER DAVIS
singer-guitarist with blues-rock band the Spencer Davis Group
“I’m showing my age here, but it wasn’t so much albums back then as much as it was good old 78 RPM vinyl. I bought records by Frankie Laine and Doris Day and by some quirk, I got turned onto Lonnie Donegan.
“And after hearing ‘Rock Island Line,’ I found out that Lonnie Donegan was digging the proverbial Leadbelly mine, as well as musicians like Blind Lemon Jefferson, Big Bill Broonzy, Lightning Hopkins...the real southern black blues.
“But the first actual album that I bought would have been ‘Train Kept a Rollin’,’ an album that’s probably worth an enormous amount of money now. It was a rockabilly album by the Johnny Burnette Trio.”
